We just received a nice note from TJ Durnham, the current owner of Rocket Science. Rocket science is the first keel boat that I designed (back in 1998). She is a long, lean and lightweight performance cruiser with hard chines and twin rudders. After 16 years she still looks cutting edge.

Rocket Science is in the midst of a trip from the West Coast of the US to Europe. Here is an excerpt from TJ's latest note:

Hi Paul, we haven't been in touch for a while. Here's a
shot of Rocket Science anchored off of Yansaladup island in the San Blas last
month. I thought you might like to see what she's up to.

We LOVE this
boat! We sailed direct from the San Blas to Bimini in just over 6 days. That's
about 1350 miles through the water, averaging

220 miles a day, just the two of us with the working
sails- boat on autopilot the whole time, rarely paying much attention to sail
trim, just relaxing and reaching at 10 knots in about 12TWS most of the time.

Just awesome.

We've got the
boat in Charleston now, and we will spend this year on the East Coast, heading
for Norway next summer. We'll keep in touch from time to time. I hope your AC
prep is coming along ok.

She is named after a WWII P-38 Lightning and sports graphics to match. They did a beautiful job on the build and finish.

Slightly Dangerous is not a kit boat really, but all the plywood and foam parts were NC cut for easy assembly. The hulls are 9 and 6mm Okoume ply, finished off at the bow with a foam crash-box. The deck is 3" blue foam with 4mm ply skins and the house is 6mm.

It will be really interesting to hear about their first season living with the boat.
We designed Helter Skelter in 2003 to the New Zealand sportboat rule for yachtsman Phil Jameson. Phil built the boat to a high standard using vacuum bagged carbon/epoxy laminates. Helter Skelter has pretty much been the boat to beat in the New Zealand sportboat class ever since. With her easy lines and well balanced rig/appendage package the 765 is fun, quick and easy to handle over a broad range of conditions. She recently won the sportboat division at the Bay of Islands race week.

Wild Oats XI successfully repeated her 2012 Sydney Hobart Line Honors performance in this years edition of the race against a formidable group of contenders. Wild Oats XI was sporting the Bieker engineered daggerfoils, forward daggerboard and ballast bulb fins from last year as well as a new Bieker Engineered side foil. Wild Oats XI is now a veritable swiss army knife of appendage options but this package allows her to adapt to a broad range of sailing conditions - a crucial capability in this years race.

STUDY PLANS READY FOR THE 32' PROA

It has been a long gestation process, but we have finally finished the majority of the design and lofting work for the Jester class proa. Attached is the Sailplan and Arrangements for the boat. We also have the construction drawings for the Hull, Ama and Beams completed. The foil and composite part drawings will be done soon.
It took a while but we have found time to carefully work through the lofting of the new proa. The picture above shows the 3D solid model of the lofted boat. This includes details such as puzzle jointed butt joints between parts (rather than scarffs) and tabs on the frames with matching slots in the hull shells to help make the boat self-jigging. The following image shows the nested parts:

The total nested materials are: (15) sheets 6mm ply, (11) sheets 9mm ply, (10) sheets 1/2" 80kg/cubic m cross-linked PVC foam, (2) sheets 1/4" foam, (1) sheet 1" foam, mdf sheets for mold frames and some carbon cplate.

The appendages (daggerboard and rudders) have also been engineered and partially lofted. In an atypical repeat of sailing conditions, this years Southern Straits Classic out of Vancouver British Columbia was a similar race to last years event, with predominately light air for the first half of the race and moderate wind for the second half. It was the first race for the new Riptide 35 and 41 designs launched earlier this Spring. Both boats showed great speed on the race course, easily pacing with much larger boats. In the end both boats won their classes with the 35 taking 1st overall on corrected time and the 41 taking 3rd overall on corrected time.

Rig details for the Shilshole 27 that is under construction across the Sound in Poulsbo are coming along. We've worked out the running back arrangement and designed the composite shroud chainplates. You can also see the pop-top in action in this view. See the Shilshole 27 build blog here.
An Update to our 32 foot Proa Design

In the last few weeks the 32 foot proa that we have been working on with proapist Russell Brown (more on Russ) has evolved to the point where we are ready to enter the detail design stage. Significant development has been made in the steering system as well as refinement of the beam/connective arrangements and cockpit layout. It looks like the lightship weight of the craft will be under 800kg, even when built primarily from marine plywood! This is possible due to the moderate surface area and low structural loading of a proa compared to other types of multihulls.

Bieker Boats is proud to have done the structural engineering and detail design of the asymmetrical daggerboard and centerline light air daggerboard used for the race. These survived the strenuous offshore conditions, including a high force impact to one of the daggerboards. In addition, Bieker Boats conceived the concept and supervised the engineering study of fins mounted to the tail of Wild Oats' bulb to prevent keel flutter at the top end of the yachts speed range.

Where others have employed single or multiple constant-velocity joints to keep the angular velocity constant, we can use a simple universal or Cardan type joint. This works because the tail shaft is in alignment with the stub shaft coming from the gear when the unit is deployed. The universal joint also functions as the hinge point for the strut.
It was a beautiful November day, the boat trimmed well, and the retracting drive unit we designed for the boat performed better than our expectations (9 knots with an 18 HP engine and zero vibration). Thanks and congratulations go to new owners Peter & Mary Salusbury and Jim Betts Enterprises for their hard work and dedication.
